The Annual Pilgrimage

Dear Friends,

Here is a multiple choice test with only one question: Why does Pastor April go to Redlands every year in June?

  1. because that's where United Methodists believe God lives
  2. because she loves long meetings
  3. because there are so many great restaurants in Redlands
  4. because it's a swell place to celebrate Father's Day
  5. none of the above

The answer is:  none of the above! A true short answer would be 'because it is required.' However, more could be said. United Methodists have a long tradition of 'Christian conferencing.'

John Wesley liked to gather Methodist preachers together to inquire after the state of their souls, to worship together, to hear reports on the various ministries, and to give guidance and direction. American Methodists continued the custom. It became common practice that every year when preachers gathered for the 'Annual Conference' they would be told where they would serve in the year to come.

Today's Annual Conferences reflect some continuity, and some change, from old traditions. All the pastors and representative members of every church within a geographic region gather once each year. Reports are received and guidance given. Decisions are made about goals and priorities for the work of the churches. Worship services focus on the joy of gathering in Christ's name, remembering those who have died in the year past, baptizing new members, celebrating youth ministry, giving thanks for those who have served in ordained ministry and are retiring, and ordaining those who will serve in the years to come.

Our region includes southern California and the Pacific Islands of Hawaii, Guam, and Saipan. The final worship service (which takes place on Sunday morning each year) includes the reading of 'the appointments.' The Bishop reads the name of every clergy person and the church or ministry to which they are assigned. Much consultation takes place ahead of time, so it's not a surprise anymore, but it is a reminder that we pastors serve under the authority of the Bishop. So, the most true answer to the above test question might be that I go to Redlands every year so that I can be sent back to Pacific Beach to serve another year as your pastor!

Most of you know that I don't have much tolerance for meetings, but I do enjoy the opportunity to see friends and colleagues in ministry. This year, I allowed myself to rest a lot while I was in Redlands, and I came home restored and energized. Thanks be to God, as of July 1, I am beginning my eleventh year as pastor of the Pacific Beach United Methodist Church. Going to Redlands was definitely worth it!

Grace and peace,

Pastor April

Another Notable Place to Visit

On June 1, Pastor April spent an hour with students belonging to the Gay-Straight Alliance at Helix High School. The group meets after school in a classroom on campus. Over pizza, the students engaged April in an in-depth discussion of the scriptures.
