"I give thanks to my God always for you because of the grace of God that has been given you in Christ Jesus, for in every way you have been enriched in him, in speech and knowledge of every kind ?? just as the testimony of Christ has been strengthened among you ?? so that you are not lacking in any spiritual gift as you wait for the revealing of our Lord Jesus Christ." (1 Corinthians 1:4-7)

Paul's grammar tends toward run-on sentences, but I gather he felt the same way about the Corinthians as I feel about the people affiliated with Pacific Beach United Methodist Church. I have been so proud of you these past few weeks!

You supported a holiday worship schedule geared toward community outreach! You fed and sheltered 12 homeless folks from Dec 30 to Jan 13! In the midst of that endeavor, you hosted Bishop Mary Ann Swenson with tremendous flair! You kept the momentum of ministry rolling in celebration of the Partners Mentorship Program and the United Methodist Women! You are exploring your understanding of God and Jesus and Spirit through studying the work of Marcus Borg! What next?

Bishop Swenson appreciated the spectacular music, the warm welcome, the beautifully prepared reception (thank you Kathy W. and your helpers), and all the evidence of our thriving ministry. That Sunday was the beginning of a week in San Diego for Bishop Swenson, and when I saw her mid-week she was still talking about what a great visit it had been. All those who worshiped with us before or after the Clergy Women's Consultation seemed equally appreciative.

The hosting of the Interfaith Shelter Network is no easy piece of work, and once again I want to thank Rick and Linda A. and Laurie L. for their leadership. Their work was made joyful by the great support they received from all those who cooked dinners, packed lunches, and spent the night at the church. Alan A. was the most frequently seen volunteer. Jack B. reports that several of the guests have gone on to find employment.

The Apostle Paul, after thanking God for his beloved Corinthians, goes on to remind them that "God is faithful" and "God will strengthen you to the end." I hope "the end" is a long way off yet for all of us, but I am certainly thankful for the way God strengthens us. When I look around at you, and all that God has enabled us to accomplish, there is no question that God is faithful!

Sincerely,

Pastor April
